Regarding the UBC water container, I took mine out of the metal cage and wrapped it like a Christmas present with black plastic sheeting then replaced it in the metal cage and put it on the north side of my garage. Seems to control the algae.

They and these biting black flies that also sucked the sap out of my two persimmon trees have nearly killed my persimmon trees until I started spraying my trees with a permethrin solution that is poisonous to all insects and bugs. Like hell they won’t bother a tree too much as they have dried out my trees’ leaves and made the leaves a curled-up dead foliage when they sucked all of the juices out of the leaves and left you with a dead tree! There are hundreds of these nasty pests on my persimmon trees and if it weren’t for the permethrin spray my trees would have died a long time ago! Thanks for letting me know what these nasty critters are as I thought they were a tiny grasshopper species at first!

We've had cat facing on our beefsteak tomatoes all season. It's now mid August 2024 and the nights have been warm and there have been weekly rains. My gardening friends all have the same problem with their tomatoes. Your theory makes no sense. Just admit you don't know.

Full time job raking! Over my driveway and back deck! Its like raking leaves 365 days a year. Exhausting amd messy. Not to mention yellow pollen dust on everything. And a horrible sticky sap that will not come off of your car. And pine needles stuck in that sap. Make sure you do not buy a house with big pine trees near anything you want to be clean

I just came across a bumblebee colony in my compost bin. I’m a beekeeper, and literally have a honeybee colony twenty feet away. Do you think the bumblebees would take to a box nest, like shown, if I try to move them into it (fully suited up, and using smoke to keep them calm)? I need to turn and use my compost, but don’t want to lose these valuable pollinators (or make them highly aggressive). I’m in Southeastern Michigan.

The American Robin is not "usually carnivorous". They are actually omnivorous, getting over half their year-round diet from fruits and berries. Most of those berries are consumed in the winter when insects and worms are in short supply. But they still eat fruit and berries throughout the rest of the year. They eat a pretty varied diet. And yes, cherries are one of their favorite foods, even when they're still green. My mother has had cherry trees for 40+ years, and robins have loved them every year.

Hello. I'm hoping that someone here might take an interest in my problem... I have a lawn that 80% red clover and 20 percent grass. I have a mosquito problem. I'd like to avoid pesticides that will kill pollinators. I'm wondering if the Beer/Epsom/mouthwash sprays will kill my clover ( I don't want to kill the clover). And will this spray also keep away bees and other pollinators? Any experience or advice?

Hey there backyardfarmer, How many of those leaves need to be treated with the glove? It looks in your example as if perhaps it was twining up a stem about 3 ft tall, so perhaps it has 10 to 20 leaves on it. Will treating just the one leaf do the job, or would you recommend more? Thanks!

No one should be planting Dame's Rocket. It has become invasive. I see it every few miles along the highway this year. It is irresponsible to suggest plants that have a tendency to escape cultivation and become invasive.
